>>> uta students will soon be required to sign pledges that they are not cheating on exams. officials present the plan to faculty and student representatives this afternoon. jim douglas says uta is trying to curb what appears to be a rising trend in college cheating. >> i promise that i will only submit work that i personally create or contribute to group collaborations. >> reporter: danielle better get used to the new honor code. students will soon have to sign the pledge when they turn in major projects. >> that's weird, but i don't see nothing wrong with it. >> reporter: go ahead and sign it, not a big deal? >> no. >> reporter: that's just what we heard from most students. that's just what school officials hope for. >> it reminds them of the importance to be a person of darker, and i think that will translate in positive ways in our community. >> reporter: uta has seen a spi in reports of academic dishonesty. >> they've come close to doubling over the last four or five years, and we have been monitoring it. >> reporter: it is just a few hundred cases out of more than 33,000 students, but educators say it is a troubling nationwide trend. in addition to having students sign pledges, in the spring uta is hiring an assistant director for academic integrity to oversee the problem of student dishonesty. researchers say increased cheating on campus appears to be driven by increased competion, heavier work loads, and the internet. daniel sees a simple lesson. >> you can't be expected to do well in life if you cheat through school. >> reporter: jim douglas, channel 8 news. >>>
