Clip Total: $9,252 midnight at a home on swallow drive. the flames caused major damage to the garage and smoke damage to the rest of the house. no one was hurt. >>> now to a story you will see only here on channel 2, right now, another bay area city is adding those controversial cameras to try to cut down on crime. we're live in richmond with more on how many of those cameras are being installed and where they are being put up. >> reporter: the answer to that would be 30 cameras. crews are mounting it to a light pole, a notoriously crime-ridden stretch and joining me is an officer with the police department. you said if these cameras had been installed years ago, you might not have an unsolved murder on your hands. >> yes. a few years ago we had a murder in the park. had we had the capabilities back then, we would have beeable to solve the murders. >> reporter: now, these cameras won't be monitored, but they will be able to wireless images to headquarters as well as dispatch. >> correct. they won't be monitoring the cameras 24 hours a day. but everything will be recorded 24 hours a day and we'll keep the recordings up to 124 hours. >> reporter: if we take a look to the back portion of the park, you can see where the trees are a little bit shorter than the rest of them. they were see -- recently trimmed and that's because they wanted to have these transmitted to another. they bounce off each other all throughout the city. it's called a wireless mesh. but very, very interesting technology very expensive as well. the price tag was at $5 million. >> correct. however, the city of richmond is only contributing $1.4 million. we're getting the rest of the funding through grants. >> reporter: and business owners are requiring them to have surveillance cameras as well. >> eventually what we hope to implement is when a person comes in to apply for a business license they will install security systems into their business which will have the a capability to record. >> reporter: thank you. they will be installing the remainder of these cameras through may 13th. reporting live in richmond, ktvu channel 2 news. let's go to ross. >>> time now is eight minutes after 7:00. sal, we can't go anywhere. they can see everything we're doing. >> yeah, which, i guess i should be concerned about but i'm really not. i have nothing to hide. plus i stay home a lot. they don't have a lot of cameras in your home yet. >> not yet. >> not yet. let's see what we have now. traffic is moving along relatively well. we have traffic cameras. |
