c1 new orleans lead contaminated soil could break ground on how scientists deal with it in the future. >> reporter: it's a backyard experiment with the potential to bring widespread change. a professor with the
university of texas at arlington. behind an abandoned home, he and a team of students about locals are working on a way to fix soil that is contaminated with lead. the student has a background in landscape architecture. >> in school you're not taught to think about the soil when working rob a project. >> the %c1 the development an impact their iq. >> the team is using different space and mixing it into the soil to see if it bonds with the lead. one of the mixtures is made from ground up fish bones. >> it would make the lead, they say there should be no more parts of million for lead in soil where children might play. but in the yard lead registered nearly 7 times higher than it should be for children. the city had to shut down playgrounds after finding lead in the soil. those working on the experiment hope it will develop a less expensive way to fix the soil. channel 4, eyewitness news. >>
