geoff! i got one! and i found my little 6-grammer. check it out! geoff! whoo-hoo! arnold: i traipsed up the hill and around the corner, showed it to geoff. check it out! what are you doing? it's a little guy. you found one already? yeah. we just found one. oh, wow. oh, that is such a shrapnel fragment. arnold: we're like little kids. we still get so excited about this. it's not as big as yours, but it's real. wow, it is definitely real. yay! one for one. we found two pieces! yeah. okay, i got to gps this. yeah. notkin: that was so great. i haven't even finished marking the gps on my find, and he just runs up over the hill like a bull. "look! i found one! blah! i got to go mark the gps! blah!" he's so crazy. these are $1,000 pieces we're finding. this is, like, cool! narrator: just when the hunt starts to really pay off, the sun begins to set. they make one last push. whatcha got there? i don't know. [ grunts ] arnold: this rock comes out on my magnet. what? it is shrapnel. i mean, it came from the piece. it's definitely a meteorite. that's totally different. it is. narrator: this find doesn't look like the sharp-edged shrapnel they expect. steve and geoff are baffled. look how prepared you are. you got little blue towels for them to keep them warm. it's got a little bit of -- a little bit of shrapnel-like markings there on that side, but this is so rounded. arnold: my theory is is that it was a piece of the outside of the meteorite that did get melted a little bit, was rounded. it got ripped off. that's amazing. narrator: find number 3 weighs in at 150 grams and could fetch $20 a gram. that puts a $3,000 price tag on it -- if they can get an export permit. arnold: according to what's been found here, it's a big one. it's in the top 5% or so. fantastic! good one, good one! wow, that was just -- that's just really cool. narrator: time is running out, and they have to clear out of the site. hey, steve! [ metal detector pinging ] oh, that sounds really good. [ grunts ] what is that? [ metal detector pinging ] oh, we must've -- we moved it. there, there, there! holy cow! [ laughs ] that's a meteorite. wow. that is amazing. it's like a claw. that is so torn up. notkin: that's actually one of the larger pieces that's been found at the crater. we ended up significantly increang the total known weight of all of the pieces that have been found. it was astonishing. at $20 a gram, you're looking at a $5,000 meteorite that just came out of the ground. it's that big. but we're not allowed to take it out of the country without an export permit. we can't just put them in the bag and take them home. narrator: the guys race them back to the university of alberta to show dr. chris herd. this was perhaps the most exciting one. oh, lo at that. wow. see, look at how sharp those edges are. i know. you can really see how shrapnel-like it is. like, the meteorite just ripped itself apart and you've pulled these pieces that are of the metal apart. it's really like what bomb shrapnel looks like. yeah, indeed. narrator: at the end of the day, they recovered four meteorites worth a total of about $10,000 -- if geoff decides to sell some. notkin: sometimes you find something that's just too nice to sell. it goes into the collection. it's fine. it was so taxing. i can't wait to sell them. [ both laugh ] [ horse whinnies ] know your land. know your prey. there he is. there they are. giddap. let's go. i'm gonna have sap up my... whoo. this ain't good. holy...man. now, now, now, now, now. now. here. there they go, right there. this is where a grenade would be nice. narrator: he's faced some
